Thiruvalluvar University was established in October 2002, in accordance with the Act of Thiruvalluvar University, 2002 (Government of Tamilnadu Act 32/2003) as an affiliating University. Is a member of the Association of Indian universities (A.I.U).

The University is located in a large campus of approximately 112.68 hectares, in Serkadu near Vallimalai on 16kms away from the city of Vellore on the Ranipet-Chithoor Trunk Road. He also has a campus in Vellore Fort.
